The name "Antioch" refers to a Roman city in Hellenistic Syria, near modern Antakya, Turkey, where Peter the Apostle is said to have founded a church, and where the Apostle Paul confronted him over whether Christians must follow Jewish law. The city later rivaled Alexandria as a center of religious scholarship, and was the birthplace of Syriac Orthodox Christianity.
