Located at 4151 Montevallo Road, the land on which the current residence stands was purchased by William Cummings in 1850. Construction on the house began not long after the land was bought, and is considered the oldest house in Shades Valley. After the Civil War, Cummings and his wife, Malinda Armstrong, moved and the house was then used as the Cahaba Furnace commissary.

Around 1870, the house was occupied by James Eastis and his wife Nancy Moses. The Eastis were a prominent early family of the area, and owned 115 acres of what is now known as Crestline Heights. James' father gave some of that land to establish the McElwain School and the McElwain Cemetery , and James himself donated land to establish the Crestline School and Hardie Chapel. The Eastis family sold their land in 1910.

In 1951 the house was bought by Edward Beaumont.
