The Birmingham News Loving Cup was an annual award given to "that citizen of Birmingham who had been most useful to the city during the year". It was announced on January 4, 1920 and the first $500 cup was awarded the following January. Seven local civic organizations nominated a member to serve on the board of judges and the newspaper solicited nominations for the prize by letter.

The contest was considered a rousing success and the News answered requests from numerous other newspapers for details on the operation of the program.
