A Birmingham native he graduated from Howard College and received the master of divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. He was ordained in 1952 and became pastor of Centreville Baptist Church in 1958. He later served as pastor of San Jose Baptist Church in Jacksonville, Florida, and Dutch Fork Church in Irmo, South Carolina.
