Levine graduated from [[Mountain Brook High School]] in [[1983]]. He was a founding member of the Mobile-based punk band The Vomit Spots and also played with [[Tim Boykin]]'s [[The Dead End Kids]]. He was a regular part of the punk scene centered on [[Morris Avenue]]'s "[[The Cavern]]" club.

He worked as a team leader in collections for the Dowse Art Museum in Lower Hutt, New Zealand before coming to UAB in [[2001]] to succeed [[Toni Nordan]].

Brett M. Levine (born c. 1965) is a musician, writer, art critic and curator. He served as director of the UAB Visual Arts Gallery from 2001 to 2011 and also directed UAB's Samuel B. Barker Memorial Outdoor Sculpture Competition.
