Dr D. Bruce Irwin is the founder, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of American Family Care Medical Centers.

Irwin grew up in Atmore, Escambia County, in south Alabama. His father lost both legs in a train accident, and Irwin grew up taking him to many healthcare providers. He decided to enter the medical field. He went to Birmingham-Southern Collge on scholarship, then went to medical school at University of Alabama at Birmingham.

After spending three years as an emergency room doctor, Irwin saw a need that wasn't being provided. In 1982 he opened the first American Family Care clinic in Hoover.

On May 8, 2008, Irwin was named Small Business Person of the Year (for businesses with 76-500 employees) by the Birmingham Regional Chamber of Commerce.
