The University of Alabama College of General Studies was created on September 15, 1966, when the programs of the Birmingham Extension Center of the University of Alabama were elevated to four-year degree status.
The College had seven divisions:
- Allied Health Sciences
- Business
- Education
- Engineering
- Humanities
- Natural Sciences and Mathematics
- Social Sciences
There were 4,600 students enrolled during the first year of the College. Dr. George Campbell was named as the first dean of the new College, and it remained part of the University of Alabama until 1969 when UAB was born.
