Dannetta K. Thornton Owens (born c. 1939) is a retired professor and dean of continuing education at Lawson State Community College teacher and two-term member of the Birmingham Board of Education representing District 5. She is running for a third term in the 2009 election.

Thornton Owens earned her bachelor's degree in modern foreign languages at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee in 1959. She completed a master's degree at Indiana University in 1969 and went on to earn an advanced certificate in French at Carleton University in 1967. She continued her education with a Ph.D. in education administration and higher education at the University of Alabama in 1977 and a juris doctorate from the Birmingham School of Law in 1996.

Thornton Owens taught modern foreign languages at Lawson State and retired as dean of continuing education. She is the president and CEO of Kennon Family Investments and Properties. She was married to the late architect Ken Owens and has four children, Kevin, Keith, William and Verna.
