Eli Capilouto is the Provost of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Before being named to the position permanently in 2005, he served as the acting provost since 2002. From 1994 to 2001 he was the Dean of the UAB School of Public Health.

Capilouto completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Alabama and joined the UAB faculty after earning his D.M.D. from the UAB in 1975. He worked as an instructor in the Department of Operative Dentistry and rose to the level of assistant professor. He left UAB to become a Senior Research Fellow at Harvard University after receiving his masters in public health in 1985. He earned a second master's in health services administration and doctorate in health policy and mangement. He then returned to UAB in 1989 as an assistant professor of health care organization and policy, and community and public health dentistry.

Capilouto has served as president of Temple Emanu-El and serves on the boards of the Birmingham YMCA, Birmingham Red Cross, and Ronald McDonald House. He also serves on the Mountain Brook Board of Education, to which he was elected in 2002.
