As the previously existing United Presbyterian Church in the USA and the Presbyterian Church in the US moved toward reunion as the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in 1983, congregations that did not wish to be part fo the new denomination could join another group and some of both denominations in Birmingham joined the PCA. The Evangel Presbytery has also organized many new congregations.
