Potts was born in Virginia, but his family moved to Buffalo, New York when he was a child. He spent a lot of time in the local Jewish Community Center and started working there as a teenager. He earned his Masters in Social Work from the State University of New York - Buffalo and has worked in JCCs ever since, with stints in Buffalo; El Paso, Texas; Portland, Oregon; Vancouver, British Columbia; and Oklahoma City before settling in Birmingham.
