Highland Coffee Company was a coffee shop that operated in the ground level of the Highland Towers at 2225 Highland Avenue from 2002 until March 2006. The store, owned by Paul Roller, served "Fair Trade" coffees, desserts and light lunches and also had a full bar and weekend brunch.
The renovation of the space, formerly occupied by Highland Booksmith was designed by architect William Pantsari and earned recognition by the Birmingham Historical Society for sensitive use of the existing space.
Regular events included weekly open-mic nights, hosted by Josh Dowdy, and Speaker's Corner programs, as well as frequent weekend live music performances. Wifi access was available free with a purchase. It was also a busy location for meetings of local groups.
In October 2005 a "Tropical Smoothie" franchise opened in the store.
On February 2, 2006 it scored a 90/100 on its last inspection by the Jefferson County Department of Health.
Crestwood Coffee Company, also owned by Roller, remains open on Crestwood Boulevard.
