Integrated Medical Systems International, Inc. (IMS) was a consulting and management firm specializing in maintaining surgical instruments for medical clients. It was acquired by the Steris Corporation of Mentor, Ohio for $175 million in 2014.
The privately-held IMS was founded in 1991 by Gene Robinson. The company tested, repaired and refurbished medical equipment and provided management, training and planning services to more than 2,500 hospitals and clinics across the country. By 2014 the company had revenues of more than $150 million and employed 1,200 people, 300 of which were based in the Birmingham area.
IMS's first offices were located on Morris Avenue and later moved to Homewood. The company consolidated its Birmingham operations to a 10-acre IMS Corporate Campus in the Sloss Business District on 2nd Avenue South in Birmingham. The company also operated repair centers in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Phoenix, Arizona.
