Mary Lee Rice was president of the Vestavia Hills City Council from 2004 to 2012. During her term on the Council she argued for regional cooperation and opposed plans for an elevated tollway on Highway 280.
Rice earned her master's of arts in cultural anthropology and urban planning at the University of Alabama and a certificate in executive management at UAB. She served as Associate Vice President for Finance and Administration at UAB from 1989 to 2001.
Rice was appointed to incoming mayor Scotty McCallum's Financial Advisory Committee in 2000 and was the city’s Interim Director of Finance in the summer of 2003. She has also served on the mayor’s Human Resources and Risk Management Committee.
