After long-time Police Chief [[Wallace Campbell]] retired from the Gardendale Police Department in July [[2007]], the Mayor and [[Gardendale City Council|City Council]] discovered the Jefferson County Personnel Board didn't have a list of police chief candidates in place, preventing them from quickly hiring a permanent replacement. To get around this limitation, Walker, already a police chief within the county, was hired as the new, permanent chief in August.

Mike Walker was the former Chief of Police of the Leeds Police Department and is the current Chief of the Gardendale Police Department.

Biography

Walker has spent the majority of his career, 25 years, with the Birmingham Police Department. He joined BPD in 1981. In 1991, he was assigned to the robbery unit of the Detective Bureau. He was assigned to homicide in 1992 and served there until being promoted to sergeant in 1994. In 1999 he was again promoted, this time to lieutenant. In May 2003, Walker retired from the Birmingham Police Department and joined the Leeds Police Department. He had also interviewed for a lieutenant position in the Gardendale Police Department around that time, making him known to Gardendale Mayor Kenny Clemons.

Walker was promoted to Chief of Police in Leeds on February 20, 2006.

After long-time Police Chief Wallace Campbell retired from the Gardendale Police Department in July 2007, the Mayor and City Council discovered the Jefferson County Personnel Board didn't have a list of police chief candidates in place, preventing them from quickly hiring a permanent replacement. To get around this limitation, Walker, already a police chief within the county, was hired as the new, permanent chief in August.

Walker lives in Hoover with his wife, Renee, and two daughters.
