Murry Bartow

Murry Bartow (born 1962 in Warrensburg, Missouri) is the head basketball coach at East Tennessee State University. He was UAB's head coach from 1996-2002, and prior to that an assistant coach for seven years under his father Gene Bartow.

Bartow graduated from Berry High School in Hoover, where he was a point guard on the basketball team, winning the team's Most Valuable Player award and earning All-Jefferson County honors as a senior. He joined the UAB basketball team in 1980, going to four straight NCAA tournaments with the three-time Sun Belt Conference champions.

He graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor's in business administration and went on to Indiana University for his master's. While there he worked as a graduate assistant for Bob Knight's Hoosiers. In 1987 he took a full time position as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the College of William and Mary, then in 1989 he joined his father on the UAB staff. When the elder Bartow retired in 1996, Murry was named UAB's second head basketball coach.

At UAB Bartow compiled a 103-80 record over 6 seasons, with 43 of those wins against Conference USA opponents. His conference records was second only Cincinnati's Bob Huggins during the same period. Three of his teams were awarded post-season berths (NIT in 1997 and 1998, NCAA in 1999). Following the 1999 season his teams struggled and his contract was not renewed after the 2002 season.

In 2003 he replaced Ed DeChellis at East Tennessee State. In his first season the Buccaneers enjoyed a stellar 27-6 season, highlighted by a 16-game winning streak, a 15-1 record in the Southern Conference, and made the school's 7th all-time NCAA tournament appearance. Bartow was unanimously picked as Southern Conference Coach of the Year.

Bartow is married to the former Tammy Earley, who was a UAB cheerleader. They have three sons, Alec, Stephen and Connor.
