Ray Melick

Ray Melick (born c. 1956) is a former reporter and sports columnist for the Birmingham Post-Herald and Birmingham News.

Melick graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in journalism and history in 1977. He joined the staff of the Post-Herald in 1983 as a reporter covering the Auburn Tigers beat. The paper switched him to covering the Alabama Crimson Tide in 1985. He graduated to columnist in 2000 and moved to the News after the Post-Herald folded in 2005. In addition to his print columns, he authored an "X's and Uh-Ohs" weblog on al.com.

Melick also co-hosted "The Zone" on ABC 33/40 with Mike Raita and Doug Segrest and "Off the Bench" with Kelly Hunter on WSPZ. He also appeared frequently on WJOX.

Melick resigned from the News in May 2010 to pursue freelance opportunities. He was hired by British Petroleum as a spokesman during the clean-up of the gusher caused by the explosion of their Mocando deep-sea oil well. He and his wife later moved to St Louis, Missouri where she has business interests.
