Robert Wesley Carter (born c. 1953) is the former chief of the Graysville Police Department and current chief of the Adamsville Police Department.

Biography

Carter became an Adamsville police officer on May 30, 1977, which was Memorial Day.

He moved to the Graysville Police Department by 1992. Carter was a sergeant and Graysville's acting police chief on September 12, 2003 when the Personnel Board of Jefferson County provided a list of candidates to fill the job permanently which did not include him. Although he had passed the police chief exam, he was outscored by other candidates. Mayor Wayne Tuggle initially refused to interview the other candidates, although he was forced to remove Carter from his acting chief position. In early February 2004, Tuggle reinstated Carter as acting chief, citing an emergency need. Given a February 20 deadline, Tuggle finally interviewed three of the candidates at 4:00 a.m. on February 19, but did not hire anyone before the deadline. Finally, in early March, the Personnel Board gave the mayor a new candidate list which included Carter and he was sworn in as Graysville's permanent police chief on March 16, 2004.

Almost three years later, in February 2007, the city disbanded the department in favor of contracting with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office to cut costs, leaving Carter without a job. It was around this time the Adamsville police chief opening was posted. Carter worked temporary jobs while going through the application process.

On May 24, 2007, Carter returned to the Adamsville police force as chief. He puts drug enforcement at the top of to-do list as chief, believing most crime can be traced back to drug activities.

As of June 2007, Carter lived in Graysville with his wife, Rhonda, and two of his four children. The two oldest have moved out on their own.
