Burr was the son of [[Borden Burr]], a founder of the firm of Benners, Burr, Stokely & McKamy, which later became Burr & Forman. He earned his Bachelor of Arts at the [[University of Alabama]] in [[1941]] and, after [[World War II]], completed his law degree at Yale, finishing in [[1948]], at which time he joined the practice and was admitted to the Alabama State Bar.

Burr died in January, 2007 at the age of 87.
He retired from active practice in the 1980s, but continued to serve the firm, and the Birmingham law community, as a practitioner and mentor well into his retirement. Samuel Hughson Burr (born September 24, 1919 in Birmingham - died January 9, 2007 in Birmingham) was a former mayor of Mountain Brook, and a partner in the law firm of Burr & Forman LLP from 1948 through the 1980s.

He was the son of Borden Burr and Nell Forman Burr. The elder Burr was a founder of the firm of Benners, Burr, Stokely & McKamy, which later became Burr & Forman.
