Shelby Academy was a private Christian school located on Shelby County Highway 22 in Montevallo teaching 4-year-old kindergarten through high school. It opened in 1970 and peaked at an enrollment of about 300 students in the early 2000s.
Facing an enrollment crisis in 2008 the school restructured its board and hired a new headmaster, Steve Zaslofsky. Those leaders made plans to increase enrollment, add a academic booster club, and jump-start fundraising by contracting a development firm.
In 2009, however, enrollment declined to 110. Further, Zaslofsky died from a heart attack shortly after the school year and the academy lost a key benefactor, forcing it to close before the 2010 school year.
Shelby Academy was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Alabama Independent School Association. All of its teachers carried certification from the Alabama Department of Education. Applicants were required to earn a minimum score on the Stanford Achievement Test prior to enrolling and no special accommodations were made for special needs students.
