the improvisor is a Birmingham-based online journal covering international developments in free improvisation. It was founded as a photocopied newsletter in 1980 by LaDonna Smith and Davey Williams. The journal includes articles and reports on topics of interest to the free improvisation community, as well as reviews of performances and recordings, and original creative works of prose, verse and visual art.
The 30th anniversary of the improvisor was celebrated with a month-long festival of improvisational performances in Birmingham and other cities.
