UAB Campus Recreation Center

The UAB Campus Recreation Center is a 3-story, 150,000 square-foot recreation center located at 1501 University Boulevard, at the intersection of 15th Street South on the campus of UAB. The facility is managed by UAB's Director of Campus Recreation, Sean Ries.

The $24.5 million center, which opened in May 2005, was built on the site of the former University Hall, Garden Apartment Complex and Blazer Hall (1962). The design by Williams Blackstock Architects won a 2007 "Institutional Honor" from AIA Birmingham. The project was constructed by B. L. Harbert International.

The center has exercise floors with free weights, treadmills, and workout bikes; a climbing wall; a four-court gymnasium; and an Olympic-size indoor pool with a hot tub. There are five racquetball courts, a climbing wall, four aerobics studios, and a 1/8th-mile running track. Exercise classes and personal trainers are available to members. The center also houses a "KidZone" play area, a game room, snack bar and a pro-shop along with locker rooms and event facilities.

Initial construction in July, 2003
