The USS Hephaestus (NCC-2004) is the Birmingham area chapter of STARFLEET: The International Star Trek Fan Association, Inc., an international Star Trek fan organization. A non-profit organization, STARFLEET encourages members to take part in charitable fund-raising activities and other public services.
Each chapter of STARFLEET takes on the name of a fictional starship, space station, or other vessel in the Star Trek universe. The Hephaestus chapter is named for the Greek god of the forge, known to the Romans as Vulcan. The chapter claims to be the oldest and largest one in Alabama. The group meets on the first Monday of each month at Kingdom Comics in Vestavia Hills.
