Banks

  • Great work on filling in some big gaps with the bank articles. There's nothing I love more than seeing the wiki grow. I'm curious about Colonial Bank's history in Birmingham - did it absorb a local bank or just open a bunch of branches here? Since it's not based in the "District", we need to make sure to emphasize the local ties. --Dystopos 10:55, 6 October 2006 (PDT)
  • That's why I included the "several offices in the Metro area" blurb. If I am not mistaken, Colonial expanded into Birmingham several decades ago, but I am not sure if it absorbed any existing banks. This is one of the few local banks that I haven't worked for, so I don't know all of the history. I will expand the article and do more research later. The explanation is at Bhamwiki:Copyrights. Short version is that we're claiming a "Fair Use" under US Copyright law to reproduce logos, book covers, album covers, and magazine covers (at screen resolution) to illustrate articles on those topics. Any other work that is protected by copyright (which is pretty much anything published after 1923, with certain exceptions) can't be legally reproduced here without express permission. Because this encyclopedia is itself published under a free license, we should avoid reproducing work that has not been released under compatible terms (e.g. users of BhamWiki should be able to appropriate material for their own use). Therefore if you wish to upload your own work, it is most welcome. You will be given credit, but you will lose other rights by publishing it under the CC license. Redirects

Darren, I'm glad to see you're using redirects to try to make Bhamwiki a better research tool, but I thought I'd give a pointer about circular redirects. An entry should not link to a redirect page that points back to that same page. Altenate names should generally appear in bold. For example, once you created the Banco Hispanico and Bank of Alabama redirects, it created two circular links on the CapitalSouth Bank page, which I've now fixed by bolding them. You might want to read the Wikipedia page on redirects. All the Wikipedia specifics don't apply here, of course, but it gives a lot of good advice. To graduate (from)

  • Your minor edit to Alan Jacobs prompted me to refer to the dictionary. You will be gratified to know that 77% of American Heritage Dictionary's "Usage Panel" objects, with you, to the construction "She graduated Yale in 1998", preferring "She graduated from Yale in 1998" which has an 89% vote of approval. The etymologically correct usage, of course, would be "She was graduated from Yale in 1988", but that archaism enjoys only 78% of the panel's approval. Names in Categories

  • I didn't realize we were using the full name when we are categorizing people. I did notice that WP does it that way but hadn't seen it here on BW. I apologize for the cleanup you're having to do. --Wheresdib 11:50, 27 December 2006 (PST)
  • No problem. I only just noticed it with the recent race car drivers entries. We do it because it assures a logical system to the sorting in the category. Using single letters you could wind up with the Allisons, for example, in any random order. (I believe.) --Lkseitz 11:59, 27 December 2006 (PST)
  • Just to clarify, it's not necessary to pipe the article name after a category for sorting most of the time. For example, "Amani Raha" will automatically be sorted by that name. Sorting is primarily for people's names so they can be sorted "Last_name, First_name" instead of by the article name ("First_name Last_name"). Another special case is articles that are primary for a category (for example Cobb Lane (street)) should use "*" as the sorting character so they show up at the top of the articles in the category. In 99.9% of the cases, this should only apply to one article in the category. And there's the weirdness User:Dystopos does with street numbers and street categories, but I won't get into that discussion again here. :-) --Lkseitz 13:36, 2 January 2007 (PST)

Jordan

  • I would prefer if we could find a photo of him that the photographer could release specifically for our use. I am planning to start allowing copyrighted photos that are accompanied by specific permission (though it hasn't yet been implemented and would not affect fair use where no permission is given). Once that's in place, maybe the Baron's office would let us use a promotional shot. Abbrev.

  • The international standard I am following uses periods only when the omitted letters are at the end of the word. So Dr, Mrs, Mr, Sr, Mtn, and Rd would not get periods, but initials and abbreviations with letters omitted at the end would. (Prof., Esq., Capt., Cir.). Template for Reservoirs of the Coosa River

  • Lee, can you create a template for Reservoirs of the Coosa River, based on the chart at the bottom of the page of the Lake Mitchell article? On Club 21

I don't think I would call what you did to the article whitewashing because whitwashing means covering something up. What actually happened here is that you stripped it of any relevance. Now it sounds just ho hum and thats sad. Lets keep working on it because this is one phase in Birmingham past where it was avant garde and at the forefront and not a follower. I think that is important. "Goth" night never aspired to keeping it the status Quo. Clipping the mixed part where everyone regardless of color, sexuality or whatever makes it appear just like every other place in B'ham and we know thats not reality. I looked for local newspaper clippings about this article but didn't find any but I will continue to look. Please do the same if you have resources to do so. I should go look up some pictures from then. Maybe we should work on an article about "Birmingham Goth movement. I bet I could come up with some info. Artsojourner 10:38, 22 February 2008 (PST)

  • I am trying to rewrite it so that it is encyclopedic. You can't make claims without a source, not on here. We allow some original research, but mainly for info that is factual. Just about everything you write has a slant to it, and while there's nothing wrong with that, it is hard to let opinions stay unsourced. I looked for articles on Club 21 and couldn't find any. It isn't perfect, and it isn't necessarily right, but we have to be unbiased on here. --Wheresdib 10:44, 22 February 2008 (PST)
  • I'm not sure if we'll ever find the sources we would need to really write up what Artsojourner wants. But then again we might be lucky and find a profile in a counterculture zine or something that writes up exactly what's missing. Another possible route is to wrote something more personal for another publication (a blog, or The Terminal or something) and then link from here to that piece. The purpose in keeping BhamWiki neutral and sourced is so that it can be trusted just as much by people who are coming from a completely different perspective. Everyone can agree on the address, the owner, and club policies. Reasonable people might differ on the value of the club to local culture. --Dystopos 13:20, 22 February 2008 (PST)

On Frohock

She taught art at UAB and was a formidable teacher. She is best known for bringing the idea of Book Arts to the forefront in the south.
