Weiss Dam is a dam on the Coosa River in Cherokee County. It was built in 1961, the uppermost of seven dams on the Coosa built by the Alabama Power Company. It was named for former chief engineer Fernand C. Weiss and creates the 30,200-acre Weiss Lake.
Weiss Dam is used for power generation only during peak demand, for a few hours a day on weekdays. A 21-mile section of the former riverbed was abandoned by the canal leading to the dam. This segment is called Dead River and still harbors a number of rare species.
