Winneba, Ghana (formerly called Simpa) is a port city of 60,331 located on the Gulf of Guinea in southern Ghana, about 35 miles west of the capital, Accra. It was first settled in the early 1500s and is presently the capital of the Effutu Municipal District. In addition to port-related activities, the city is renowned for its music, and houses Ghana's National Academy of Music. In 2009 Winneba and Birmingham forged a "sister city" relationship.
