Yvette Richardson

Yvette McPherson Richardson is an associate dean at Virginia College and the Democratic candidate for Alabama State Board of Education, District 4 in the 2010 general election.

Richardson has a bachelor of science from Miles College, a master of science and education specialist degree from Samford University, and a Ph.D. in education from the University of Alabama.

She has worked as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal of Glen Oaks Elementary School and director of curriculum and superintendent of Fairfield City Schools. She went on to serve briefly as superintendent of Russell County Schools, and later as a private education consultant. She has also taught as an adjunct professor at Troy University, Samford University and Miles College.

Richardson was in the Leadership Birmingham Class of 2000. She defeated Margie Varner for the Democratic nomination for the Place 4 seat on the State Board of Education after six-term incumbent Ethel Hall decided not to seek re-election. Her platform is focused on addressing funding for schools, reducing bullying, and improving programs for special needs students. She faces Republican Tom Dooley in the general election.

Richardson has two children, Alma Marie and Jon.
