Barry Smith

Barry Wise Smith is a Homewood City Council representative for Ward 4.

Smith earned her bachelor’s degree in communication with a focus on journalism from Mississippi State University in 1992. She then went on to get a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Alabama in 1994.

Smith moved to Homewood around 1995. She served on the Edgewood Elementary School PTO, chaired the Leadership Recruitment Committee of the Homewood City Schools Foundation Board and was on the Communication Committee. She was also secretary of the College Choice Foundation board and has held several leadership roles at Trinity United Methodist Church.

Smith was appointed to finish the term of Jenifer Champ Wallis on August 11, 2014 after Wallis resigned to move out of state. Smith was sworn in August 25. She then won reelection in 2016 and 2020. Much of Smith's focus has been on improving the connectivity and walkability of Homewood, particularly by adding sidewalks. On the Council, she chairs the Special Issues Committee.

Barry is married to Kyle Smith and has two children.
