Kudzu (genus Pueraria) is a flowering vine native to Japan (where it is called 葛 or "kuzu") and brought to the United States in the late 1800s as an ornamental shade vine, as cattle fodder, and for use in stabilizing exposed soil banks, such as in road construction. The plant's aggressive rate of growth and tendency to form a dense cover have contributed to its spread as a nuisance invasive, blanketing landscapes across most of the U.S. South.
