The Magic City Boppers is a cultural organization dedicated to preserving, elaborating and sharing the "Birmingham Bop", a style of dance that became popular in Birmingham in 1952-53, introduced by way of dance clubs in Panama City, Florida. The linear 6-count dance is related to the shag or East Coast swing, but distinctive for its slinky pull-bys and turns and is usually danced to mid-tempo blues, R&B or beach music.
The club, which is an affiliate of the American Bop Association, gives lessons, hosts weekly dances at Gabriel's Cafe in Hoover's River Oaks Shopping Center, holds monthly dance meetings at the Birmingham Firefighters Hall, and organizes an annual "Hangout Weekend" in Panama City.
