Oakachoy Bridge in the 1960s

The Oakachoy Bridge (or Okachoy or Thomas Bridge) was a 56-foot long wooden covered bridge spanning Oakachoy Creek on Newman Road off Alabama State Highway 259 northeast of Nixburg in Coosa County.

Built in 1915 by Melton Harris for $400, the Oakachoy Bridge was a modified queen-post truss with a single span. It provided a connection near the location of an old ford between Rockford and Dadeville.

It was owned and maintained by the Coosa County Commission. The bridge was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on October 28, 1977. The bridge had also been nominated to the National Register of Historic Places and was officially listed on September 23, 2001. However, because it had been burned down by vandals on June 2 of that year, the listing was nullified.
