Operation Green Wave

Operation Green Wave was a clean-up effort initiated in 2016 by Mayor William Bell as a response to concerns voiced at a series of town hall meetings.

The Birmingham Department of Public Works was given charge to implement the program with the priority of removing "blight" wherever found. In its first three weeks, between the launch on September 12 and October 5, officials reported 8,969 tons of trash and debris collected, plus 19 abandoned wrecked cars. Workers also cute 1,878 overgrown lots, cleared 497 blocks of alleyways, captured 247 stray animals and issued 301 citations.

The program was renewed in subsequent years, including a $1.5 million appropriation in the 2017-2018 Birmingham budget.
