The Pratt Coal & Iron Company was a short-lived industrial company, organized in 1881 by Enoch Ensley after he acquired the Pratt Coal & Coke Company from Henry DeBardeleben for $600,000. Ensley sold the business to the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company in 1886 and assumed the presidency of the company. TCI, and later U.S. Steel, continued to operate a separate Pratt Mines division until the 1950s.
The Birmingham & Pratt Mines Railroad, constructed in 1878 and operating as the Pratt Coal & Iron Co. Railroad, became the basis for the Birmingham Southern Railroad, which was organized in 1899.
