Preuit Holland Sr

Preuit Irwin Holland Sr (born September 8, 1900 in Moulton, Lawrence County; died December 28, 1970 in Birmingham) was an educator and long-time principal of Avondale Elementary School.

Holland was the son of Lawrence County state representative Jeremiah Holland and his wife, the former Mollie Rebecca Delashaw, who died when Preuit was a child. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I and earned his bachelor of science at Birmingham-Southern College.

Holland married the former Lona Bell Sockwell in 1920 and had three children, Wanda, Mollie, and Preuit Jr.

Holland was teaching manual arts at Martin Elementary School in 1929. He taught in the manual skills department at Woodlawn High School between 1939 and 1945. In 1946 was made principal at Avondale Elementary. In 1961 he was also chair of the Birmingham Beautification Board.

After Lona's death in 1945 he was remarried, in 1947, to Margaret May McPheron.

Holland died in 1970 and is buried at Elmwood Cemetery.
