Shelby County Arts Center
The Shelby County Arts Center is a 20,000 square-foot public arts facility developed and operated by the Shelby County Arts Council at Old Mill Square Park in Columbiana. It was designed by Black Design Architecture and dedicated on September 20, 2019.
The center houses studios, classrooms, offices, galleries and performance space.
In 2008 the City of Columbiana helped the Arts Council to obtain a portion of the former site of a Summer Classics furniture plant which had burned to the ground on May 22, 2004. Planners envisioned a 26,000 square-foot performing arts center on the site. Preliminary architectural plans, commissioned from HKW Architects with grants from the Alabama State Arts Council and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development included a 450-seat reconfigurable "black box" theater, galleries, two classrooms, practice rooms, a catering kitchen, a dance studio, offices and storage areas. Fundraising for the $5 million+ project and for operating expenses began in 2010.
EBSCO provided funds and secured naming rights for the art gallery portion of the center.
