Shirley Hester is a researcher at the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and was, for 10 years, clinical director of the Obstetric/Gynecologic nurse practitioner program at UAB. Before that she was head nurse in the post-partum unit at Baptist Medical Center Princeton and an obstetric nurse at West End Hospital.

When the nurse practitioner program moved to the School of Nursing, Hester moved into research full-time, continuing work that she began in the 1980s on clinical trials for the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. In 2007 she was inducted into the Capstone College of Nursing's Alabama Nursing Hall of Fame in Tuscaloosa.
