Skirt! is a national network of locally-inflected, freely-distributed publications for women. The print magazine was launched by Nikki Hardin in 1994 in Charleston, South Carolina. The company was acquired in 2003 by Morris Publishing Group of Augusta, Georgia, allowing it to expand to other markets. Skirt! is currently licensed in 21 mostly Southern cities, each with its own print magazine and website. The company also publishes books under the Skirt!books imprint.

Beginning in April 2008 Skirt! Birmingham was licensed to Media General, parent of WVTM-TV. Its offices were at 1732 Valley View Drive and it distributed approximately 20,000 copies of each monthly print edition.

In July 2009 Media General company decided to transfer its license to another market, laying off members of the local staff. The rights to the Birmingham market reverted to Morris Publishing and the future of Skirt! Birmingham is uncertain.
