UAB Gurney Derby

The UAB Gurney Derby is a homecoming tradition held at UAB since 1994. The event, which is organized by the UAB National Alumni Society, pits various departments and campus organizations against each other in a race to push a hospital gurney down and back a pre-defined stretch of 13th Street South.
Each team is comprised of two men and two women. The gurneys themselves are pulled out of UAB Hospital storage and are distributed to teams on a first-come, first-served basis.
Prizes are awarded to the fastest team, the best-decorated gurney, the most entertaining "patient" (usually a doll), and to the slowest group to cross the finish line.
