The Shelby County Humane Society is a non-profit animal shelter and adoption center located at 381 McDow Road in Columbiana. It was founded in the 1970s as Shelby County's dog pound. The executive director since 2022 is Bill Rowley.
The organization is committed to functioning as a "no-kill" shelter, under the terms of the American Humane Association's "Asilomar Accords". In general it works to transfer un-adopted animals to shelters in states with fewer strays. It does carry out euthanization for untreatable medical conditions, dangerous behaviors, and when required by governmental agencies. It publishes annual statistics for animal outcomes on its website.
In 2022 the Shelby County Humane Society was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Remy Fund to support its spay/neuter programs.
