Christmas decorations
Regarding the Christmas decorations, I think there's a step missing in the history. It could be faulty memory, but I swear I remember a time when two opposing sides (east & west, IIRC) had trees while the other two were a stocking and a wreath. It was a big deal to me as a child, because when we went to pick up my father from work, I only got to see the south and east sides. It was rare for me to see the north and west sides.
