Marguerite Johnston Barnes
Marguerite Johnston Barnes (born August 7, 1917 in Birmingham, died December 13, 2005 in Houston, Texas) was an author, historian and career journalist.
Barnes studied journalism at Birmingham-Southern College, and it was there she met her future husband Charles Wynn Barnes. After several years as a reporter for the Birmingham News, she became the Washington bureau chief for the News, the Birmingham Age-Herald and the London Daily Mirror. In 1946 the Barnes' moved to Houston, Texas where she wrote a daily column in the Houston Post from 1947 to 1968, and then served as assistant editor of the editorial page.
Barnes served as writing lecturer and instructor for University of Houston and Rice University. She was the recipient of numerous awards, and published the books Public Manners, A Happy Worldly Abode, and Houston, the Unknown City 1836-1936.
She and her husband retired to a ranch in Fayette County, Texas.
