Loretta Rowan is a fourth-grade teacher at Mountain Brook Elementary School and a giraffe-lover.

Rowan has decorated her classroom with giraffes since she started teaching in 1983. In 2006 one of her students, Bill Perry, enterred the name "Rowan" in a contest to name the Birmingham Zoo's baby giraffe. The name was selected from over 1,200 entrants and Mrs Rowan's class has adopted Rowan the giraffe.

Mrs Rowan hopes to take a safari tour to Africa to see giraffes in the wild.
