The 1983 mayoral election for the city of Birmingham was held on October 11, 1983 with two challengers vying for the office held by one term incumbent Richard Arrington, Jr.

In a contest billed by the newspapers as a "Battle of the Ph.D.s", Arrington soundly won a second term of office over City Council challenger John Katopodis.

Results

  1. Richard Arrington, Jr: 56,967 votes (60%)
  2. John Katopodis: 37,608 votes (40%)
  3. Sonja Franeta: 171 votes (0.2%)

Voters in black precincts turned out at record levels, with 77% of eligible voters casting ballots.
