This is a List of Birmingham homicides in 2000. A total of 89 homicides were reported within the city limits during 2000. Note that a "homicide" refers to the cause of death as determined by a medical examiner, not to the commission of the crime of murder as charged by police and prosecutors.

The homicide rate for the city of Birmingham, based on the 2000 census figure of 242,820 population, was 36.7 homicides per 100,000 population for the year. Birmingham had 81 homicides in 1999, 108 in 1997, a record low of 60 in 1984 and a record high of 135 in 1994.

Birmingham averaged 7.4 homicides per month, or one every 4.1 days.

Birmingham Police detectives have cleared 71 of the 109 recorded homicides (64.2%). Three were ruled justifiable, two by reason of self-defense and one police shooting which survived review by the Jefferson County District Attorney. Two other shootings by Birmingham Police are still under review.

52 of the 89 homicides (58%) took place within a residence, with 19 of them directly attributed to domestic disputes. Of the others for which the circumstances are known, at least 18 were initiated by robberies, 10 occurred during fights, 8 were directly related to the drug business, 2 occurred during burglaries, and 1 was caused by police. 20 cases were listed with no known motive.

Responses

Police chief Mike Coppage cited Project Safe, the city's domestic violence program, and Project ICE, a program which leverages gun violations to remove career criminals from the streets, as major parts of the police departments response to the rising homicide rate. (Robinson - Jan 4, 2001)
