2006 Birmingham Steeldogs

The 2006 Birmingham Steeldogs played their seventh season at the BJCC Arena under first-year head coach Ron Selesky. The team's record was 7-9-0 with an average of 45.3 points per game scored and 45.9 points per game allowed. The Steeldogs eight home games were played before an average crowd of 6,318.

2006 record (7-9-0)

• April 8: Won 41-36 vs. Everett Hawks. Quarterback Ryan Hawk completed 5 TDs to overcome a 10 point halftime deficit. Kerry Wright caught three TD passes and returned a kickoff for another.
• April 14: Lost 43-44 in overtime vs. Rio Grande Valley Dorados. Hawk missed a two-point conversion that would have taken it to a second OT after coming back from 24 points down at the start of the 4th quarter.
• April 21: Lost 40-62 at Louisville Fire. The Steeldogs failed to score in the 2nd period and had too much ground to make up.
• April 29: Won 40-34 at South Georgia Wildcats. The defense starred in this game, recording 4 sacks, 5 tackles for loss, and a blocked field goal.
• May 5: Won 63-60 vs. Louisville Fire. Another 5 TD game for Hawk. The 3rd quarter was key as the Dogs outscored the Fire 28-7 and went into the last period up 46-34 after trailing 27-18 at the half. This was the first of three Barber Dairy, "Faith Nights" with pre-game concerts by Christian artists, free Bibles for fans, and Steeldogs clad in Christian Throwback Jerseys during pre-game warmups and post-game festivities.
• May 13: Lost 44-62 at Florida Firecats. 5 touchdowns from Hawk weren't enough to overcome several lucky breaks for the homestanding Firecats in a penalty-ridden matchup.
• May 20: Lost 17-21 at Tennessee Valley Vipers.
• May 27: Won 71-30 vs. Macon Knights. Bradly Chavez, coming off a knee injury, caught four touchdowns in a rout of the Knights.
• June 3: Lost 31-40 at Everett Hawks. The offense fizzled with just 111 passing yards and a costly penalty for hitting the kicker on a missed field goal with a minute remaining and a 6-point deficit.
• June 10: Won 42-35 vs. South Georgia Wildcats. Hawk came off the bench to rally the team in the fourth quarter, throwing a 23-yard touchdown to Allyn Sheffield. Starter Robert Kent, who had been splitting time with Hawk, finished 14 for 25 with 152 yards and 3 touchdowns.
• June 17: Won 43-42 at Memphis Xplorers. Alex Walls kicked a 25-yard field goal, set up by a Bradly Chavez interception, to provide the win over the top-ranked Xplorers.
• June 24: Lost 27-60 at home vs. Florida Firecats. Florida scored on their first 9 drives and never allowed the Steeldogs to catch up. Hawk started and Kent finished the game with an interception on the last play.
• July 8: Won 84-46 at the Rio Grande Eldorados. Robert Kent completed 15 of 17 passes for 4 touchdowns and a Steeldog record 88.2 completion percentage. He also rushed 6 times, scoring 2 more TD's, and even caught a 6-yard strike for his 7th score.
• July 15: Lost 47-52 at Macon Knights. Kent started and had three touchdowns each passing and rushing, but it wasn't enough as the Knights held off a Steeldog rally in the 4th quarter.
• July 22: Lost 52-56 vs. the Memphis Xplorers. A Bradly Chavez interception with 40 seconds remaining gave the Steeldogs a chance, but couldn't complete a pass to steal the win. Robert Kent played with pain in his shoulder, completing 20 of 27 for 252 yards, 5 TDs and 1 interception in front of 8,784 fans.
• July 29: Lost 40-55 in the final game of the season, at home with 9,089 in the stands. Kent completed 8 of 17 for 124 yards, 2 TDs and 1 interception. Marquel Blackwell debuted in relief in the 3rd quarter and completed 8 of 18 for 108 yards, 2 more TDs and another interception. Allyn Sheffield dominated the receiving, catching 11 passes for 174 yards and 3 TDs.
