The 2016 Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, held on August 26-28, 2016 was the 18th in the annual series. In all, about 250 films were screened during the festival, including full-length narrative and documentary features and numerous short films. Seven venues were used for the festival, including, for the first time, the newly-restored Lyric Theatre.

The opening night feature, In a Valley of Violence, was screened at the Alabama Theatre. Award-winners included Gip, a documentary about Bessemer grave digger and juke-joint owner Gip Gipson, and First Lady of the Revolution, a documentary about Henrietta Boggs, who was a student at Birmingham-Southern College when she married José Figueres Ferrer, then head of Costa Rica's Social Democratic Party and president of the country in 1948-1949.
