The 2016 Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, held on August 25-27, 2017 was the 19th in the annual series. In all, more than 250 films were screened during the festival, including full-length narrative and documentary features and numerous short films. Screening venues used during the festival included the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Alabama School of Fine Arts, First United Methodist Church, Lyric Theatre, Alabama Theatre, McWane Science Center, and Red Mountain Theatre Company's cabaret theater.

The opening night feature, Step, was screened at the Alabama Theatre. Award-winners included Alabama Bound, a documentary by Lara Embry and Carolyn Shere about lesbian couples living in Alabama.
