Bessemer City Council

The Bessemer City Council is the legislative body for the city of Bessemer, with offices in Bessemer City Hall. The body meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 AM, and on the fourth Tuesday at 7:00 PM.

The current council representatives, elected in 2004, are:

Davidson is the Council President, and Belcher is the President Pro-Tem. Myra Armstead is the Council Secretary.

2006 election

On August 22, 2006, Bessemer voters went to the polls to decide all seven council seats.

  • District 1: Incumbent Davidson won re-election.
  • District 2: Incumbent Alexander deafeated Clinton Harris, Sr 620-409 in the September 12 runoff.
  • District 3: Incumbent Belcher won re-elections.
  • District 4: James Stephens easily defeated incumbent Woods and challenger Robert Dale White with 76 percent of the vote.
  • District 5: Walker was defeated in the general election. Albert Soles defeated Margie Varner 444 to 343 in the runoff.
  • District 6: Incumbent Matthews held off a challenge from Dock Sott
  • District 7: Earl Cochran successfully challenged incumbent LaBrenda Marshall in the runoff, 487 to 368.

The new Council will be sworn in October 1, 2006.
