The Birmingham Amateur Movie Association was established on August 3, 1928 as a member organization of the New York City-based Amateur Cinema League of America. It was founded by 50 charter members with the objective of writing and producing local cinematic works that would "contribute to the artistic life of Birmingham"

The Association's first president was Jack London. Mrs Louise O. Charlton was director of the group.
