Birmingham Grotto has hosted the NSS Southeastern Regional Association's "Cave Carnival" in [[1961]], [[1976]], [[1981]], [[1985]], [[1996]], [[2005]],[[2012]], and [[2018], the NSS Board of Governor's meeting in [[2004]], as well as assisting with the 2014 NSS Convention in Huntsville.

As a group, the Grotto promotes the safe exploration, study and conservation of natural caverns in the region and organizes caving trips at the meetings. The group was founded by Walter Anderton and chartered by the National Speleological Society on May 7, 1958.

From 1960 to 1961 the group published Cavea Novea, a monthly newsletter that was succeeded by the quarterly Confederate Caver in 1963. That publication produced only two issues. The current Birmingham Grotto Newsletter began appearing in 1970.

Birmingham Grotto has hosted the NSS Southeastern Regional Association's "Cave Carnival" in 1961, 1976, 1981, 1985, 1996, 2005, 2012, and 2018, the NSS Board of Governor's meeting in 2004, as well as assisting with the 2014 NSS Convention in Huntsville.
